**TL;DR:** To set up an AI agent for your business, start by writing the job as one sentence with four parts: the work (verb), where it happens (channel or app), what done looks like (outcome), and what must come back to you (the limit or approval). On Fless, that sentence is enough to build, test and launch an AI employee; you then add knowledge and adjust rules in plain English.

The first sentence Bisi typed was: "Help me with my customers."

It is an honest sentence. It is also a bit like hiring someone and saying only "help out". A new hire would smile, nod, and then spend the first week asking what you actually meant.

Bisi tried again: "Answer WhatsApp messages, take cake orders, send a Paystack payment link and remind me of tomorrow's deliveries."

That second sentence built Ada, an AI employee with a real job.

> **Illustrative example:** Bisi and Ada are illustrative characters, not a real customer. The sentences in this guide are real examples you can adapt and use on Fless.

If you are wondering **how to set up an AI agent for your business**, the most important step is not technical. It is writing down the job clearly. This guide gives you a simple formula, twelve examples, and the mistakes to avoid.

## Why one sentence is enough to start

A good one-sentence job description works like a good brief to a new hire. It does not cover every situation. It says what matters most, and leaves room to learn the rest.

On Fless, that sentence is the start of everything. From it, Fless works through **Describe → Set up → Connect → Test → Go live**, and shows you what it is doing:

- **Understanding the job:** what the employee does and what "done" looks like.
- **Designing the employee:** its role, tone and how it handles tricky cases.
- **Picking apps and approvals:** which apps it needs, and what waits for you.
- **Writing test conversations:** realistic situations to try it against.
- **Checking it is safe:** before anything goes live.

The details come from your business, not your sentence. Onboarding is one click: paste your website and Fless learns what you sell, your prices and your tone. You add more to the **Knowledge** base whenever you like.

## The four-part formula

Every strong job sentence has four parts:

| Part | Question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| **Verb** | What work does it do? | Answer, take, book, chase, plan, screen |
| **Where** | Which channel or app? | WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Gmail, your calendar |
| **Outcome** | What does done look like? | An order taken, a payment link sent, a viewing booked |
| **Limit** | What comes back to you? | "Let me approve cancellations", "send anything bigger to me" |

Put them together, and you get a sentence like Bisi's:

> **The one-sentence job:** "Answer WhatsApp messages, take cake orders, send a Paystack payment link and remind me of tomorrow's deliveries."

**Verbs:** answer, take, send, remind. **Where:** WhatsApp and Paystack. **Outcome:** orders taken and a delivery reminder. **Limit:** in this sentence, the limit is implied by what it leaves out (custom designs and anything unusual). When you go further, you can make it explicit: "and send custom designs to me".

## Twelve job sentences you can adapt

Here are one-sentence jobs for common small business work. Copy one, change the details, and you have a starting point.

| Business | One-sentence job |
|---|---|
| Bakery | "Answer WhatsApp messages, take cake orders, send a Paystack payment link and remind me of tomorrow's deliveries." |
| Clinic | "Book patient appointments from WhatsApp, send reminders the day before, and let me approve cancellations." |
| Restaurant | "Take table reservations on WhatsApp, confirm them that morning, and tell me when we're fully booked." |
| Online store | "Settle refunds under £50 on your own, and send anything bigger to me." |
| Estate agent | "Reply to new leads in minutes, qualify them, and book viewings with the good ones." |
| Boutique | "Answer Instagram DMs, check what's in stock, and send a payment link for anything available." |
| Recruitment agency | "Screen new applicants against the job, shortlist the best five, and book interviews in my calendar." |
| Any business | "Chase unpaid invoices politely every 3 days, and flag anyone more than 30 days late to me." |
| Social media | "Plan a week of Instagram and LinkedIn posts from our news, and wait for my OK before publishing." |
| School | "Answer parents' questions about fees and term dates, and send me anything about a child's welfare." |
| Law firm | "Answer new client enquiries, collect the case details, and book consultations. Never give legal advice." |
| Online shop | "Answer order status questions with the tracking link, and tell me about any delivery that's late." |

Notice how many end with a limit. That last clause is what turns a clever assistant into a safe employee.

## Seven mistakes that make AI employees fail

1. **Too vague.** "Help with customers" gives no outcome. Say what done looks like.
2. **Too many jobs.** "Answer WhatsApp, run our Instagram, do the books and hire a cleaner" is four employees. Split them.
3. **No channel.** If you do not say where the work happens, you have to answer that question later anyway.
4. **No limit.** Every job touching money, cancellations or publishing needs a line about what waits for you.
5. **Rules in your head.** "We never deliver on Sundays" belongs in the Knowledge base, not in your memory.
6. **Skipping the test.** Practice mode exists so you can find the gaps before a customer does.
7. **Trying to be perfect first.** Write a good-enough sentence, test it, then add rules in plain English as you learn.

## From sentence to working employee

After the sentence, three short steps make it yours:

### Add knowledge

Your website covers the basics. Add what is not there: full price lists, delivery areas and fees, policies, FAQs and the tone you use with customers.

### Set approvals

Sensitive actions can wait for your OK: payment links, refunds, cancellations and publishing. Start strict. Relax them once you trust the employee.

### Test in practice mode

In practice mode, nothing is really sent: actions are simulated. Play your most difficult customer. Each time the employee does something you would not, add a plain-English rule ("always ask about allergies", "never offer discounts") and test again.

## For teams that prefer code

If you have a developer, Fless also has an SDK in private beta. An AI employee is one TypeScript file describing the job: its skills, knowledge, tools and which actions need a person's approval. The [Fless docs](https://getfless.com/docs) cover the manifest, testing in the sandbox, evaluation and launch. The one-sentence job is still the best place to start, even in code.

## Why Fless is the easiest place to start

- **One sentence to build.** The formula above is all you need to begin.
- **Website onboarding.** Paste your site, and Fless learns your business.
- **Practice mode and checks.** Every action is simulated before launch.
- **Approvals built in.** Money, cancellations and publishing can wait for you.
- **Your customers' languages.** Replies come in the language the customer uses.
- **A Chief of Staff.** When you have several employees, department managers coordinate them and you get a daily brief, free on every plan.
- **Your apps.** WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack, HubSpot, Shopify, Stripe, Paystack, Instagram, Google Calendar and more, or request the app you need.
- **Fair pricing.** A Free plan to build and test, and paid plans from $39 a month plus usage, billed in your currency.

Where we are today: Fless is in private beta, with public launch on Tuesday November 10, 2026. Marketing employees are live now, and other roles are open to early-access teams. See the [docs](https://getfless.com/docs) and [pricing](https://getfless.com/pricing).

## Write yours now

Take two minutes. Fill in the four parts for the job that keeps slipping:

- **Verb:** what it does.
- **Where:** which app or channel.
- **Outcome:** what done looks like.
- **Limit:** what comes back to you.

Read it out loud. If a new hire would understand it, an AI employee will too. Then [join the private beta](https://getfless.com/start) and build it.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I set up an AI agent for my business?

Start with the job, not the technology. Write one sentence that says what the agent does, in which app, what a finished result looks like, and what must come back to you. On Fless, you paste your website, enter that sentence, and Fless designs, tests and sets up the AI employee for you to approve.

### What makes a good one-sentence job description?

Four parts: a clear verb (answer, book, chase, plan), the channel or app (WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram), the outcome (a booking made, a payment link sent, a reminder sent), and the limit (what waits for your approval or goes to you).

### What if my job is too big for one sentence?

That usually means it is two jobs. Split it, build the first one, and add the second when the first is working. Fless's Chief of Staff and department managers coordinate several employees for you.

### Do I need to write rules and edge cases up front?

No. Start with one sentence, then test in practice mode. Every time the employee does something you would not, add a rule in plain English, such as "always ask about allergies" or "never offer discounts".

### Can I change the job later?

Yes. You can update the job, the knowledge or the approval rules at any time in plain English, then test again before the change goes live.

### What does Fless cost?

Fless has a Free plan for building and testing your first employee, and paid plans from $39 a month plus usage, billed in USD, NGN, GBP, EUR, KES, GHS, ZAR or AED.
